Evaporation and Condensation

Water moves between states all the time — sometimes you can see it, sometimes you can't.

Illustration for Evaporation and Condensation

Evaporation

When a liquid slowly turns into a gas (even below boiling point), that's evaporation. It's why puddles dry up.

Condensation

When water vapour cools down and turns back into liquid drops — that's condensation. It's why cold drinks 'sweat'.

The water cycle

Evaporation from oceans → clouds → rain → rivers → back to the sea. Water never goes away!

🔑 Key Terms

Evaporation
Liquid changing slowly into gas.
Condensation
Gas changing back into liquid.
Water cycle
How water moves between Earth and sky.

Did you know?

The water you drink today might be the same water a dinosaur drank millions of years ago — water just keeps recycling!

Try it at home: Make a mini cloud

  1. Pour hot (not boiling) water into a glass jar.
  2. Place a plate of ice cubes on top.
  3. Watch — a small cloud forms inside! You just saw evaporation and condensation.
