Three states of water
Ice is solid water. Water you drink is liquid. Steam and water vapour are gas water.
Freezing and melting
Water freezes into ice at 0°C and melts back into liquid at the same temperature.
Boiling
Water boils into steam at 100°C at sea level.
🔑 Key Terms
- Freezing point
- The temperature at which a liquid becomes solid (0°C for water).
- Boiling point
- The temperature at which a liquid becomes gas (100°C for water).
Did you know?
Unlike most things, water EXPANDS when it freezes — that's why ice floats and why pipes burst in winter!
Try it at home: Ice melt race
- Place an ice cube on a plate in the kitchen.
- Place another in a bowl of warm water.
- Time how long each takes to melt. Why is one so much faster?
